I think it's all about how people represent themselves. I've had run-ins with "Asia-philes" who claim to be all about the culture, but their interest really only extends to the food and the clothing and half-a-dozen phrases that they use incorrectly. I don't think of myself as a Anglo-phile because I watch "Doctor Who" and like Topic Bars. It's the presumption that grates the most.
Word to all your points, especially Number Six. Yes, I know "Saiyuki." I read it in Chinese when I was twelve and the title's "Journey to the West," dammit!
