Ironically enough, what you're noticing is something I've seen talked about and accepted as a given on a lot of the minority-focused forums on lj, and it's seen more as a side effect of white privilege than of simply being suburban (and that has a rather derogatory nickname, WWS--"White Woman Syndrome"). After all, most of the Black people I know never harbored any illusions of life being perfect because no matter what our situation, we tend to get taught, and taught early, that we will *never* be seen as fully equal unless we work twice as hard, and that there will be people who hate us just because of our skin color.
