I am trying not to read my entire psychopathology textbook (Gabbard, "Psychodynamic Psychiatry") with my fingers stuck in my ears - er, eyes? - in that manner, but it's just so hard. It feels so blinkered. "We are going to study this thing in this way, because that is what we do, whether it makes sense to do so or not!" Fortunately there are other readings assigned that actually seem potentially useful, and the professor acknowledges that for some things this isn't really a very useful approach.
I don't actually object to psychodynamics as such; I just object to it being the tool one uses all the time because one loves it so much. Use it if and when it's the right tool to do something worthwhile, y'know?
