A few days ago I passed a church whose front-lawn letterboard sign read, "GOD LOVES YOU AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT." Possibly it was intended to reassure me that I could never do anything so terrible as to destroy God's love for me, even if I was trying, but all it put me in mind of was a line from a story by cucumberseed: "With the Gods, it is always rape."
