Sassafrass Boston performed on Saturday, to great success. We had maybe thirty people in the audience (some of whom had never heard of us before, but came up to see the concert because they'd been at a gaming convention in the basement of the church where we performed), and raised $175 (and four cans!) for the Harvest Food Pantry.
I am proud of our performance. "My Brother, My Enemy," with
faerieboots's stoic, heartbroken, and furious Odin against
aurelia_star's betrayed and flamboyant Loki, was intense and effective-- we had audience members in tears.
juldea and
aurelia_star paired beautifully on "Somebody Will," especially in the rising energy of the final chorus-- and their physical comedy and acting on "A (Proper) Mermaid Song" had the audience roaring. I was particularly fond of
rushthatspeaks's revolutionary fervor in the lead on "Sapphire, Ruby and Gold," and I enjoyed singing lead on "Daughter of Apocalypse." Our more choral pieces showed both how much we'd worked on blending and sounding good together-- like our entrance singing "Jubilate Deo"-- as well as how much we were enjoying singing together as a group on songs like "The Futhark Song" and "Gift of Life." We had some rough spots (we've done better "Fall" and "Hearthfire"s, and "Ice and Fire" had great performances by
juldea and
aurelia_star but also some flaws), but overall, the concert went smoothly and skillfully, and I believe a good time was had by all.
aurelia_star's excellent boyfriend B took videos and photos, both of which came out quite well (thank you, B!), and she will post the videos presently.
juldea's excellent friend N also made audio recordings, and we're waiting to hear how those came out.
This was my final performance as part of the Boston constellation of Sassafrass, and I'm delighted with it. We worked well together as a team, even through everyone's chaotic schedules and a rash of illnesses in the two weeks leading up to the concert, and I believe the results sing for themselves.
