So, I am making a principled call to action that everyone buy more Girl Scout cookies.

No, seriously--

Some transphobic fuckwits are calling for a boycott. Because when a little transgirl asked to join the Girl Scouts, the Girl Scouts of Colorado thought it over and released an official statement that "if a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout."

Now, you can argue that just by being the Girl Scouts, the organization is gender-essentialist, and worry about what happens to transboys who come out after years of being Girl Scouts, etc. But I think that's less important than the fact that the Girl Scouts are a huge international organization which affects the lives of thousands of kids, and they're doing the right thing, and they're going to be taking some heat for it. So, y'know, buy cookies! If you're vegan, buy cookies and give them to your friends! Email the Girl Scouts and tell them standing up for the rights of transgender girls is a good thing to do! And so forth!

I saw that article. My mother almost never buys Girl Scout cookies anymore—I was a Girl Scout in elementary school and I think she overdosed—and she's planning to buy from the next girls who come door-to-door, as they still do.

Oh, yes, although not the kind that can be posted on the internet. (Primarily because they're all actual photographs in a box somewhere, but they'll also be unilaterally terrible. Girl Scouts was where I learned I had a profile like someone banged a door on me.) My parents signed me up in second grade on the theory it would make me less alienated from the rest of the girls in my class. It worked about as well as you can imagine, but it gave me something to do on Mondays after school.

Email sent, and when the neighborhood Girl Scouts come around, I'm going to be buying my first box of Girl Scout cookies in over a decade. Thanks for writing this post!

I like to think it was fate that I found out that they will, in fact, have a new lemon cookie this year, and emailed my wife to make her email our temple's troop mom and add a box or three to our order.

Whether Savannah Smiles will ever compete with the Lemon Chalet Creme (departed) I do not know, but my pudge feels vindicated.

(In re the GS/BS thing, I am so glad we had a daughter. The Boy Scouts are just... ghastly on the queer rights/human rights record.)

Wait, what happened to the Lemon Chalet Creme? Please tell me they still make Samoas and Do-Si-Dos.

Yes, but the Lemon Chalet Creme went to its reward last year and was replaced by some cranberry-white chocolate unacceptability. I was, to use the vernacular, pissed.

Are there other ways to support the girl scouts? I think this move is great but really don't want to support the cookies.

I think you can send them emails of support? Or donate? Or possibly volunteer for them, though you personally are a bit busy for that.

What's wrong with the cookies?

You can donate directly, I believe. If you want to support local girl scouts, you can Google "girl scouts [your location]" to find the local council and donate there.

I might have to get some of those cookies now. The coconut caramel ones were always a soft spot of mine. Also, hi, it's Zury :).

Oh, yay for Girl Scouts. That's a step in the right direction, for sure.

I rarely need encouragement to buy their cookies, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them this year.

There's usually a little cookie table in front of the Coop, girled by Girl Scouts. I will get some Thin Mints.

A friend of mine has at least one trans guy Girl Scout in the history class he teaches, from whom he was extremely gleeful to buy cookies.

Ok, that is AWESOME of the Girl Scouts.

(but many of us vegans are taking a moral stance by economic boycott, so not so much with the cookies ;) ).

I saw some articles about the girl (Bobby, apparently she didn't actually join) a couple months ago, and got this article from my girlfriend recently. I'm surprised they didn't let it go, but am hoping the conversation can be made productive. We're seriously thinking about going to talk to the woman behind it, when we visit SoCal...probably will, if we can, in fact.
