It just occurred to me that if you belong to a non-Hell believing religion, you could still say "gods (or God) dam it." As in, "I would like you to make this annoying thing stop flowing."
Not eternal torment, just... for fuck's sake, quit it.

I think of profanity as one of the classes of language that I learned in order to make myself understood to other people, not because it was necessarily resonant with me or expressed anything about my belief system. I didn't really start using it until grad school, even.
